Sun Safety Tips When on the Water

With the summer season coming into view on the horizon, it’s time to hit the water and make the most of the warmer days. While you are enjoying the water, like on one of our pontoon boat rentals in Panama City Beach, it’s important to take steps to protect both you and your family from the sun.

More than a third of Americans report getting sunburned each year. Getting sunburned can increase the risk of skin cancers, such as melanoma, as well as skin damage, including rough spots, dark spots, and wrinkled or dry skin.

Below, we will share practical sun safety tips to keep you and your family safe this summer.

Use Sunscreen

We recommend that you use broad-spectrum sunscreens with an SPF value of 15 or higher. Apply sunscreen at regular times throughout the days, and always follow the printed instructions. The reason why broad-spectrum sunscreens are recommended is that they protect against both UVB and UVA rays.

Apply sunscreen to all parts of your uncovered skin. Pay particular attention to areas around your neck, ears, lips, nose, feet, and hands. If you are in and out of the water during the day, it is best to reapply the sunscreen more frequently.

It’s important to not entirely rely on sunscreen alone. Wear caps and protective clothing and avoid staying out in direct sunlight for long periods of time.

Wear Sunglasses

Sun reflecting off water and sand, in addition to direct sunlight, can result in exposure to UV radiation. This can result in an increased risk of developing eye problems. We recommend that you opt for sunglasses with “100% UV protection” or “UV400 rating” printed on the label.

Also check that children are wearing sunglasses that offer UV protection. Many toy sunglasses offer little to no protection against UV radiation.

Protect Against Heat Exhaustion

During your time out on the water, and when you are exposed to sunlight, drink plenty of cold drinks. Take frequent breaks from any high-energy games you are playing and seek shelter if you feel dizzy or tired.

Children’s bodies are less efficient at cooling than adults, which means they are more vulnerable to heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heatstroke. Take extra precautions if you are accompanying children on the water.

Staying Safe in the Sun When Out on the Water

There is no better place to be than out on the water when the sun is shining. The above sun safety tips will help you and your family to stay safe at all times. Always practice a safety-first strategy and do not take any unnecessary risks, especially when the sun is at its hottest.

In Panama City, the best way to enjoy the water is by taking out a pontoon boat rental. Salty Pontoons is a great choice for pontoon boats, jet skis, and dolphin tours. Contact our team to rent a pontoon boat today.
